Back Pain

Most people will experience back pain at some point in their life, whether it’s a dull ache after a long day or something sharper that stops you mid-movement.

An estimated 32 million Americans are living with it right now, and it’s become the leading cause of disability in the United States. But back pain is rarely just a muscle problem, and it almost never resolves by waiting it out. Ola — a state of lasting health — is built from the foundation up. At Cornerstone, we focus on understanding what’s actually driving your pain, not just managing how it feels.

What’s Really Causing Your Back Pain?

The spine is a complex, interconnected system — and when one part is under stress or out of alignment, the rest feels it. Some of the most common causes we see include:

Disc Bulges and Herniations

One of the most frequent — and often most painful — sources of back pain. Over time, the outer edges of spinal discs can wear down, placing pressure on surrounding nerves. Studies suggest that as many as 37% of Americans have some degree of disc bulge or herniation, though many don’t experience symptoms. For those who do, the pain can be significant — and may radiate into the legs or cause weakness if a nerve is involved. While herniations are difficult to fully reverse, precise chiropractic care can help prevent further progression and meaningfully reduce pain.

Spinal Misalignment

When vertebrae shift out of their proper position, it creates stress on the surrounding structures — nerves, muscles, and discs. These misalignments can develop gradually through repetitive stress, poor posture, or physical trauma, and are one of the most commonly overlooked contributors to chronic back pain. Correcting them is foundational to lasting relief.

Muscular Strains, Sprains & Stress

Strains and sprains — often from improper lifting or sudden movement — are common and typically respond well to care without invasive intervention. Chronic stress is a less obvious but equally real contributor: elevated stress levels create muscle tension and trigger points in the back that can be surprisingly painful. If stress is a consistent part of your life, it may be amplifying your symptoms more than you realize.
